Why are NFL teams using those pop-up medical tents on their sidelines?

Posted on by

The NFL is taking a new approach toward diagnosing injuries, particularly concussions, on the playing field, and it’s going to take up some prime real estate on the field level.

The Cowboys were riding high after Week 1’s win over the hapless Giants. Then they lost to the Broncos in a 42-17 blowout, and it raises a fair question: Is this Cowboys team destined for yet another early exit from the playoffs?

It’s become a hallmark of this Dallas team. The Cowboys haven’t made it past the Divisional Round since 1995, and last year’s 13-3 team lost a heartbreaker to the Green Bay Packers in divisional play after earning the top seed in the NFC and a first-round bye.

Hopes were high for this team heading into the season. Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott both had stellar rookie seasons, and Dallas boasts the best offensive line in the league. The team made moves this offseason to shore up the other side of the ball. The NFC East isn’t exactly shaping up to be the strongest division. Even considering how the Cowboys looked against the Broncos, there’s no reason to think this team can’t get to the postseason again.

Rockets owner Leslie Alexander initially pledged $4 million to relief, matching the Astros’ donation — but upped that on Tuesday to $10 million. The team’s initial statement said:

“Out hearts are heavy seeing the devastation that so many of our friends, family and neighbors are experiencing,” the Rockets said in a statement. “Leslie Alexander has contributed $4 million to Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund in an effort to help Clutch City come back stronger than ever. Please stay safe, Houston.”

Which 0-2 team has the best playoff chances?

Posted on by

Did you know NFL teams that start the season 0-2 rarely make it to the postseason?

Yes, you probably already knew that. You’ve probably heard the percentages on this referenced over and over for the past few days, both before and after Sunday’s games. Since the NFL went to 12 playoff teams in 1990, only 12 percent of teams to start the season 0-2 have made the postseason. Since the switch to eight divisions in 2002, it’s just 10.5 percent.

From the four teams that can win it all to the group just looking to stay competitive, here’s a rundown of every team that sits at .500 after two games.
However, while each individual 0-2 team has only a small chance to make the playoffs, the odds that at least one of them will actually do it are much higher. Each week, Football Outsiders runs 50,000 season simulations for our playoff odds report. In 41.2 percent of our simulations this week, one of the teams that is currently 0-2 makes its way to the playoffs. In fact, three teams have done it in the past two seasons.

With the Jets trailing by only four points with 1:50 left in the first half, Raymond muffed a punt at his own 14-yard line. The Raiders recovered at the 4 and scored three plays later on a momentum-changing touchdown.

Raymond also had two muffs in Week 1, both recovered by the Jets. After Sunday’s game, coach Todd Bowles expressed frustration, admitting he was concerned.

“I’m not going to give any excuses,” Raymond said. “You’ve got to catch the ball. On a punt return, you got to do it. That’s one of the easier kicks of the game that I took for granted.”

The Jets have two job vacancies because Raymond handled punts and kickoff returns in the first two games. They could turn to wide receiver Jeremy Kerley and/or rookie running back Elijah McGuire or they could use the roster opening to add a return specialist.

The Eagles’ defense made up for the miscues.

Posted on by

“That’s tough on the secondary, any time the quarterback can just extend plays and find guys down field,’’ he said. “I mean, they have to cover guys for a long time and that could be really frustrating.’’

“He is a physical guy. His eyes are always downfield,’’ Eagles coach Doug Pederson said — while handing out praise somewhat grudgingly with some of the offense’s mistakes in mind. “We were able to make big plays once we were able to break the pocket.”

Wentz was not flawless. One Eagles turnover came via Washington’s pass rush, which created a deflection that Ryan Kerrigan turned into an interception he returned 24 yards for a touchdown. The other was a badly overthrown lateral to Agholor on a gimmick play out of the backfield.

The Eagles’ defense made up for the miscues. Wentz got the offense out of at least as much trouble, enough times to bring back memories of past Eagles escape artists.

The obvious drawback would seemingly be injuries, but Bennett says neither he nor coaches are worried about that at all. And the Seahawks certainly don’t seem concerned, awarding Bennett with a three-year extension worth $31.5 million that is due to keep him in Seattle through the 2020 season.

The injury that did keep Bennett out of the lineup for a while in 2016 was a knee problem, but the pass rusher now enters the postseason healthy and ready to fully contribute. Don’t expect to see much funny dancing in the team’s playoff run, though.

“You don’t want to get no fines,” Bennett said. “You get a sack, you get back up. You don’t want to give up no yards — ticky tack or nothing like that. It’s all about getting those yards if you want to win.”

Bennett earned a spot in the Pro Bowl for a second straight year, finishing the season with five sacks in 11 games.

With Hurricane Irma gone, Jags say they will host Titans as planned

Posted on by

The Jaguars will play host to the Tennessee Titans at EverBank Field at 1 p.m. ET Sunday as scheduled, the team and Jacksonville mayor Lenny Curry announced Tuesday evening.

Dolphins president Tom Garfinkel tweeted that Hard Rock Stadium has been declared structurally sound, clearing the way for the Dolphins and Hurricanes to play games there.

The Tampa Bay Bucs, after consulting with the NFL and the Tampa Sports Authority, will play Sunday’s game against the Bears at Raymond James Stadium as scheduled.

In addition, owner Shad Khan is donating $1 million to Florida’s First Coast Relief Fund in the wake of Hurricane Irma, which caused massive damage and flooding in the Jacksonville area and across the state. The Jaguars are donating 5,000 tickets to area first responders and residents impacted by the hurricane.

“This is not simply about football,” Curry said. “This is about bringing our city and our community together. This is about getting back to normal operations. Jacksonville was on the way up before this and continues to be on the way up.”

The Chargers have shown some fight on the road in recent seasons with a 10-4 ATS record in their last 14 road games and a 5-2 ATS record in their last seven road games against Denver.

You guys beat the Cowboys twice last year.

New England enjoys the NFL’s largest average weekly advantage at QB, defined as the difference between Brady’s average Tier figure (1.0) and the averages for New England’s opponents (2.82). It’s tough finding likely defeats on the Patriots’ schedule. I had them going 12-0 before losing back-to-back road games during a six-day stretch as part of a three-game road trip in December.

Second, DraftKings is full PPR scoring, so I also want to pick out running backs who have some involvement in their team’s passing game. Backs that play first and second down but don’t rack up any catches have a much tougher path to reaching value.

He’s a competitor, always going 110 percent. He’s proved why he should be one of the highest-paid tight ends. Every time I lined up against him, he was giving it to me, and I had to make sure I gave it back. His route-running isn’t superb, but he gets open somehow, and he has great hands. He goes up and attacks the ball, not letting it fall into his hands so that a DB can make a play on it.

You played against Dak Prescott in college. Is he legit or a product of a great situation?

He’s definitely gotten smarter coming into the league. He’s always been a great leader and competitor. When I was a junior at Alabama, he took a [Mississippi State] team that was not even on the map and he got them to No. 1 in the rankings. And the same thing happened when he came into the NFL — he almost went undefeated. He has that type of leadership, that background that says “I’m not going to settle.”download

Who will be the NFL’s next highest-paid player?

Posted on by

It’s almost a foregone conclusion these days that any quality signal caller who gets a contract extension will become the league’s highest-paid player. That happened with Matthew Stafford on Monday, but the state of the current quarterback market means he won’t be the top-paid player for long.

The Rams’ front office — a contingency that includes COO Kevin Demoff, general manager Les Snead and senior assistant Tony Pastoors — flew to Atlanta on Wednesday to meet with Donald’s representatives at CAA but didn’t necessarily come any closer to an agreement. Snead previously said it would “probably be a safe assumption” that Donald needed to report by the end of last week — or at least by Monday — to have much of a chance of playing in the opener.

Donald is no longer subject to the $40,000-a-day fines, but he probably accumulated at least $1.4 million in fines for not showing up throughout the preseason and in training camp. Those fines tend to be picked up by the team on new contracts.

“Guys are ready to go, and we’re getting a plan in place, and the preparation goes on,” McVay said. “Fortunately, we’ve got a bunch of guys that we feel confident in that are ready to step up. Our message continues to remain the same: If he’s here, great. We’ll accept him back with open arms. But in the meantime, we’ve got to get ready to play a football game. And we know the Colts are getting ready as well.”

Yankees views on playing this weekend in alternate jerseys for 1st time ever

Posted on by

“Obviously it’s going to be a little weird because we’ve only worn pinstripes at home and gray on the road, but it’s just one weekend and at the same time it’s all for a good cause and I think a lot of people are excited just to show off a little on the fun side. You get to show what nickname you like to use, and some of the fans will feel they’re getting closer to you in that matter.”

Patriots owner Robert Kraft awarded 19-year-old Dylan Wagner with front row seats to the team’s season opener Thursday after Wagner gave the FBI the tip that led to them finding Brady’s jersey in April.

However, this deal brings about a feature that we have never before seen on jerseys of any of the four major sports across the United States. Many teams have agreed to put advertisements on their new uniforms.

Although the Hawks’ sponsorship deal with Sharecare is for five years, NBA owners voted to authorize advertising patches as only a three-year pilot program. The NBA could extend the program, but in any case, there are many other elements of the Hawks-Sharecare agreement, including signage and radio/TV commercials.

Arnold said Sharecare approaches the deal as part of its mission, rather than as an advertisement.

“Our vision here was, how do we empower people to take control of their health?” Arnold said. “I’ve always believed that there’s a powerful connection between, obviously, good health and sports and that sports teams, like the Hawks, have the power to convene people and inspire people. And so we looked at the patch and said that’s not an advertisement for Sharecare, it’s a movement.”

New Netflix-like company allows fans to rent Detroit Lions jerseys

Posted on by

According to ESPN, the company is called Rep The Squad and will let fans rent a jersey to wear and then send it back in a prepaid envelope.

For adults, the subscription will cost $19.95 a month and $16.95 a month for youth jerseys, ESPN reports.

While the company has backing from Madrona Venture Group and Maveron (co-founded by Starbucks bigshot Howard Schultz), it counts Edgar Martinez and Seahawks receiver Doug Baldwin among its investors, Geekwire reports. Richard Sherman is serving as a brand ambassador.

Rep the Squad hopes to expand to all pro sports teams eventually, but for now it only carries jerseys of Seahawks, Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers players.

Even if you’re not a football fan, it might come in handy if you want to board a flight early at Sea-Tac.

A Seattle entrepreneur thinks he’s found a solution that will conveniently make him money. Brian Watkins has launched Rep the Squad, a subscription service that rents jerseys for a monthly fee. Taking an early-days Netflix approach to “man cave” attire, fans select a jersey from Rep the Squad’s website and the company ships it to your door. After returning it in a prepaid envelope, the company will send out the next jersey in your queue.

As a bonus, there’s no need to wash the Dorito stains out before returning them. Rep the Squad will dry clean dirty jerseys at no additional charge, which oughta put your mind at ease during repeated trips to the nacho bar.3
