You never want to see that happen to anybody.

Portland is in a funk, having lost five straight, including its previous four at home. They were held to 42 percent shooting from the field on Monday, and they allowed the Warriors to shoot it at a 55 percent clip. Only three Trail Blazers players scored in double digits.

He scored a game-high 39 points. After being down by as many as 24 points, Portland reduced the deficit to eight down the stretch of the fourth quarter, but Lillard had little help and wasn’t able to finish the deal.

Hours before his medflight to Pittsburgh, the Ravens gathered to continue preparing for Sunday night’s game against the Steelers, they opened their team meeting by praying for Shazier, the Ravens website reported.

“You just pray for a person like that. It doesn’t matter what team he’s on,” Ravens receiver Mike Wallace said. “We’re one family, the NFL family, at the end of the day. That’s a person who’s a son, a dad, whatever he is to somebody. People like him and care about him so you never want to see anything like that happen to anybody.”

It was more coincidental, because Jeter has kept his distance from the Yankees since his playing career, rarely returning to visit during spring training (even though he resides in Tampa) or coming to Bronx to check out a game. He was honored in Monument Park when his uniform was retired in May, but beyond that, he has been a ghost around the Bronx.

Another longtime executive said that Jeter faces a new reality as a former player who now finds himself in the front office. He’s responsible for an entire organization now, and he has to clearly explain the plan if he wants to get his fan base behind it.

Coach Sean McDermott stood his ground in the days following the Nathan Peterman debacle, but Tyrod Taylor was named starter for this game. chargers_014-180x180

On Monday night at Oracle Arena, the Warriors snatched their seventh straight victory by winning 111-104.

The Golden State Warriors were without three of their starters, and yet the Portland Trail Blazers were still no match for the reigning NBA champs.

Although the Browns have played in only four one-possession games during their 0-12 start, they’ve made plenty of teams sweat early in games. They have failed to make the one or two key plays in the middle of games to tip the outcome into their control. Gordon gives them a much better shot at doing just that.

Green Bay can’t afford another loss with its slim NFC playoff hopes, and Baltimore has zero breathing room in a tight AFC wild-card race. The Browns would have had no chance in those games without the punch of Gordon.

But in the Dawg Pound, they suddenly have more than a puncher’s chance to play spoiler, once or twice.

Then Tomlin took it a step further and did what I can’t recall any NFL coach ever doing: He talked about a game three weeks down the road, the Steelers’ potentially pivotal matchup against the Patriots on Dec. 17.

“I’m going to embrace the elephant in the room,” Tomlin said. “It’s probably going to be part one. But probably if we’re both doing what we’re supposed to do, the second is really going to be big. And what happens in the first is going to set up the second one, and determine the location in the second one.”

And Tomlin didn’t back off after the Packers game when asked about his previous comments, saying, “(Dungy) asked for non-coachspeak. We have a good football team. I’ve got a great deal of confidence in them. Everybody in America knows that’s a big game. We couldn’t deny that if we wanted to. So I stand by the statement.”

The Seahawks’ slow-starting ways caught up to them against the Jaguars. They gave up too many big plays, to the point they couldn’t make up ground by making a few plays of their own.

Trammell was en route to Orlando from San Diego and was departing his flight when he received the call.

After the bad publicity from that, Jeter tried to hire the four men back, but at a much reduced rate. They all declined.

New Mexico State, meanwhile, hasn’t bowled since 1960 and is breaking the nation’s longest postseason drought. No assignment, even to the least prestigious bowl out there, would be a disappointment to the Aggies.

Arians feels there would be greater uniformity in rules enforcement if more than 17 percent of NFL officials (21 of 134) were working on a full-time basis. The league began hiring full-time officials this season with plans to grow the ranks in future years.

Asked why he believes having full-time officials would result in better game-day performances, Arians said, “They’d be held more accountable, first of all. Right now they’re accountable to their union. There are no ramifications (for), ‘Hey, I made a bad call. My bad.’ If they were full time and under the league umbrella, that would be totally different.”

Like Morris, he was asked to keep the news under his hat at first, so he avoided his traveling companions, who included big league managers Bruce Bochy, Bud Black, Rich Renteria and Brad Ausmus, as well as former Padre Trevor Hoffman. Finally, as he approached the baggage claim area, time was up and he was able to share the excitement.

If there’s a game the Seahawks could most afford to lose, it’s the Week 17 finale against the Cardinals. That would still give them the tiebreaker over the Cowboys after eliminating them from consideration head-to-head in Week 16. The Falcons could easily lose two with what’s left (at Buccaneers, at Saints, vs. Panthers) and the Packers just need to lose once (at Panthers, vs. Vikings, at Lions) with an even tougher slate.nike_chargers_537-180x180

The Steelers are AFC North champions for the third time in four seasons.

Pittsburgh secured a playoff berth with a 39-38 shootout win Sunday night over rival Ravens.

After blowing a 14-point lead, Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown engineered two scoring drives in the final 3:15 to pull off a remarkable comeback which rivals Brown’s “Immaculate Extension” last Christmas.

Dorsey became the Browns’ new general manager last week in one of the clumsiest transfers of power we’ve seen in a while — which is saying a lot since Dorsey was available only because the Chiefs fired him last June, in the middle of the offseason. The Browns topped that, because they’re the Browns, and under Jimmy Haslam’s watch, that’s what they do best — being worse than the others.

“The money always wins out in the end,” one of the executives said.

With Stanton gone, the new CEO is the biggest star on his own team. And so far, Jeter looks like he’s playing out of position.

Gordon is a game-changer for the Browns’ offense. Cleveland had its chances in Los Angeles in what turned out to be a 19-10 loss, but other than the running of Kizer and the athleticism of rookie tight end David Njoku, it lacked other sparks. The Chargers’ defense is good, and it hung tough at home.

The Browns stay in many games because, defensively, they’ve been able to stop the run and have a top corner of their own in Jason McCourty, who can contain at least one half of the opponents’ outside passing game. They haven’t been able to finish games because of offensive inconsistency, with either their running game or passing game letting them down. Protecting the ball and being efficient has been difficult with Kizer’s inexperience, with the flash often being dashed.panthers_127

Avalanche score twice in 41 seconds, beat Panthers 7-3

The Colorado Avalanche came from behind and never looked back.

The Capitals won eight of their next 10, and they had won four in a row before losing 3-1 to the New York Islanders in Brooklyn on Monday.

Rookies Madison Bowey and Chandler Stephenson are adding depth to the Capitals (18-12-1).

“My game has definitely improved a lot throughout the last two months already,” Bowey told the Washington Post. “It’s just going to keep on building and keep on getting better as the season goes on. Obviously, this is definitely exciting and a big step ahead in the right direction for me.”

The Cowboys are 6-6 and still lingering on the fringe of playoff contention. Had they just repeated the woes of the previous three games, they would have been out of it — like Washington is now.

They’re not done, though. They found a way to tread water, to find their groove, to go beyond surviving with Elliott, to thriving.

The Cowboys offense did more than win. They remembered who they were, and why — and that they’re more than Elliott, and not invisible without him.

Trojans head coach Neal Brown and members of his staff share a bond with North Texas coach Seth Littrell. Troy defensive coordinator Vic Koenning held the same title at North Carolina when Littrell was the offensive coordinator with the Tar Heels.royals_003

God willing hope we play in June. No one cares about this right now.

“In the discussion that we had, Malcolm conveyed to us — based on discussions that he had with the NFL — that the money would come from funds that are already allocated to breast cancer awareness and Salute to Service,” Reid told Slate.com Thursday. “So it would really be no skin off the owners’ backs: They would just move the money from those programs to this one.”

“I mean, it’s part of the game,” Lue said. “Everyone goes through it, and Tristan is a big part of what we do, so we got to figure out how we got to use him, we got to do that so I have a plan in place and we’ll see how it works.”

Thompson said that playing in three straight NBA Finals has affected the way everyone views the regular season; whatever time he missed pales in comparison to missing a playoff game.

“All you guys care about is what happens in June,” Thompson said.

Fair or unfair, Ryan Leaf embodies the “bust” label. Drafted second-fiddle to Peyton Manning in 1998, Leaf took the opposite trajectory and suffered for the constant comparison. In just 21 games and 18 starts as a Charger, Leaf had a record of 4-14, tossing 13 touchdowns to 33 interceptions. And to make matters worse, Leaf wasn’t even a likeable loser. He had one of those faces, and a flair for tantrums.

Each draft day still serves as a reminder — when the inevitable Leaf profiles, prison interviews and allusions return — that San Diego made a huge mistake. And that stings.

Goodell’s given owners plenty of reasons not to like his disciplinary powers too, taking a star quarterback off the field for footballs that may or may not have been deflated, taking away draft picks for free agent tampering claims, etc.

The Dolphins quarterback has been ruled out for the team’s Week 12 matchup against the Patriots with a concussion, coach Adam Gase announced Friday.panthers_003

Carolina is rolling into its bye week after a dominant win over the Dolphins.

Is Bortles rolling with efficiency? No. But with the burden of winning games no longer on him, he’s relaxed and not making big mistakes. He’s getting passes to the right guys in the right situations, and as teams have struggled to stop Leonard Fournette even when stacking the box, Bortles is gaining more confidence in his favorable coverage connection with new go-to receiver Marqise Lee.

“When Brandon Jennings was the face of [Under Armour],” Fox said, “I was in the Bloodlines, the Jukes and all the Micro Gs.”

Rather than bring athletes to its more modest Portland, Oregon offices, Adidas rented out a sprawling mansion in the hills of Los Angeles. Poolside couch pillows featured Fox’s name in stitching, with the brand presenting him with the ability to be a “creator,” and tap into their expressive and lifestyle-driven current direction.

Carolina is rolling into its bye week after a dominant win over the Dolphins.

The Titans entered the season as the favorites to win the AFC South and, after playing the Steelers on Thursday, will have three of their last six games against division opponents.

Falcons (5-4), Lions (5-4), Packers (5-4), Cowboys (5-4), Redskins (4-5), Cardinals (4-5). Atlanta has wins over Dallas, Detroit and Green Bay, which can play a big part in allowing it to not totally succumb to the Super Bowl hangover.

49ers (1-9), Giants (1-8), Bears (3-6), Bucs (3-6). San Francisco brought the Giants down to its level officially. The Bears and Bucs have gone from one-time playoff sleepers to sleeping until next season.nike_bills-137

Whitworth says Rams need adversity: While disappointed, Rams left tackle Andrew Whitworth took a philosophical view of the loss that ended their four-game winning streak. “It’s frustrating, but the reality is we need it, we need some adversity,” Whitworth said. “And if we get this opportunity again in the playoffs — and get a chance to get in — then we’ll be prepared for it.”

“I want to be able to listen and hear, to give hope, to give joy any way as possible as long as I have energy.”

Aaron Rodgers will not play again this season — With the Packers (4-4) falling out of the playoff hunt and not likely to back into contention, there is no reason for Rodgers to play again this year. The two-time NFL MVP can sit out of the rest of the year to ensure his broken right collarbone fully heals. There’s no need to risk injury in meaningless games and Rodgers can return next fall at 100 percent.

Tarasenko has 14 points in his last 13 games (nine goals, five assists) against the Oilers.

The Blues made it 2-0 when Dmitrij Jaskin scored at 7:35. He outmuscled Ryan Strome for the puck in the right circle and hit a rising wrist shot threw sailed over Edmonton goalie Cam Talbot’s left shoulder.

It used to be that football was just the programming after the parade. It used to be that football represented a proxy argument for all the arguments left on the table, a way to keep things agreeably small. For better or for worse, it’s large now, not just an acceptable way for Americans to argue but rather the American argument itself, the real thing.nike_bills-051

Glenn played parts of 12 seasons in the NFL — six with the New England Patriots

Sean Allen reviews players who can help in fantasy with one-category production and provides his latest top-250 rest-of-the-season rankings for fantasy hockey leagues.
Micheal Ferland, RW, Calgary Flames (22.6 percent)

The day that Ferland falls from his prized slot on a top line with Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan spells an immediate end to his run as viable fantasy commodity. But until then, the 25-year-old’s point-per-game pace alongside the Flames’ top two producers can’t be discounted. If Ferland remains available in your league, consider exploiting the fantasy fallout spoils from the company he keeps, at least for now.

“He’s done an amazing job. He’s done a great job ever since I’ve been here,” Westbrook said of Presti. “He’s finding ways to constantly keep making us a better team. … You definitely are very, very thankful to have somebody like that in charge of making those decisions.”

Hopefully the resulting mess will prompt the Packers to re-evaluate what they need in order to be a more complete team when Rodgers returns next season.

Glenn played parts of 12 seasons in the NFL — six with the New England Patriots, five with the Dallas Cowboys and one with the Green Bay Packers. He made the Pro Bowl in 1999 as a member of the Patriots and finished his career with 8,823 yards and 44 touchdowns.

Former NFL quarterback Drew Bledsoe, who was Glenn’s teammate with the Patriots and Cowboys, said Glenn turned a corner as he got older.

“He was one of those guys that just grew up in the worst possible environment, and he told me at one point he had a hard time trusting people because everybody he ever trusted either betrayed him or died and so he kept to himself,” Bledsoe told ESPN’s Todd Archer. nike_bills-057

Is Giannis Antetokounmpo worth the cost in DFS on Wednesday?

Posted on by

Which players should you build around and which players should you fade in DFS as we tip off Wednesday’s NBA action? Our experts have the answers.

The Oilers pulled Talbot, who faced just three shots, in favor of Lauren Brossoit. It was the third time this season Talbot, who has started 105 of Edmonton’s last 116 games, has been pulled.

Brossoit faced 37 shots and allowed six goals.

St. Louis went up 3-0 when Jaden Schwartz knocked in the rebound of a shot by Tarasenko. Brossoit kicked out Tarasenko’s shot and it went right to Schwartz, who snapped in a wrist shot from the high slot at 3:52 of the second.

Allen dedicates performance to grandfather: Chargers wideout Keenan Allen racked up 12 catches for 159 yards and two touchdowns in the Chargers’ blowout win over the Nathan Peterman-led Bills and dedicated his display to his maternal grandfather, who passed away Saturday. Asked if his grandfather would have enjoyed his performance, Allen replied: “Most definitely, yes. I thought about my grandpa quite a lot today.”

Newton posted this the day after he, through his foundation, fed more than 850 kids in the Charlotte area a Thanksgiving meal at a local Topgolf facility. He said during the event that his goal is to impact kids in a way he never was when growing up.

“That’s what you have a foundation for,” Newton said. “It’s to make an impact. I play football on Sundays, but so much of me is bigger than football and more to it than just running touchdowns and throwing touchdowns.bills-034
