Cowboys to pick up fifth-year option on Byron Jones, report says

Posted on by

Byron Jones is staying in Dallas for at least the next two seasons.

The Cowboys are expected to pick up the fifth-year option on the third-year cornerback’s rookie contract.

According to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, Jones is expected to earn $6.17 million under the option in 2019, a salary that is guaranteed for injury.

For the first time in his NFL career, Jones is being moved from safety to cornerback in 2018 after playing two seasons at each position during his time at Connecticut.

“When you’re playing both sides of the puck, and you’re physical and engaged, it does nothing but lift your team,” coach Jon Cooper said.

‘Twas a time when Fleury and the Conn Smythe Trophy were far from synonymous, but that time has passed. Fleury was the heartbeat and backbone of the Golden Knights in their Round 1 sweep of the Los Angeles Kings, stopping 127 of 130 shots for a .977 save percentage. That number rose to .981 at even strength. The first face of the franchise was the No. 1 reason an NHL expansion team moved 12 wins away from the Stanley Cup.
He’s not the only QB oddsmakers believe will carry teams to a better season. A motivated and healthy Aaron Rodgers is expected to lead the Packers back above .500 after a 7-9 campaign in 2017.

Here are the complete odds from in alphabetical order.

“That’s funny,” Bamba replied. “I didn’t know the Knicks were in contention to be the No. 1 pick.”

The Knicks indeed hold only a 1.7 percent chance of landing the top pick in next month’s draft lottery, with the Phoenix Suns (25 percent), Memphis Grizzlies (19.9), Dallas Mavericks (13.8) and Atlanta Hawks (13.7) having the top odds.

“It honestly would mean the world to me — I grew up watching the Knicks,” Bamba said. “I watched the Knicks when they were at their worst, and I would always root for them because it’s always been in my heart. It would be awesome, you know. I live three train stops from there.”

Bamba recently spent a week working out with Joel Embiid while the Philadelphia 76ers center worked back into shape after fracturing his eye socket and sustaining a concussion.

“He’s the guy I really want to play against,” Bamba said. “I learned so much from him in just a couple of days of being around him. He’s a guy I’m really inspired to be like, and he’s the guy I want to go at.”

The Steelers must find a replacement for Ryan Shazier

Posted on by

Olasunkanmi Adeniyi, Toledo: In his final season for the MAC champion Rockets, Adeniyi finished with 66 tackles (20 tackles for a loss), 8.5 sacks and three forced fumbles. As a sophomore, he had 49 tackles with four sacks, so he made a huge jump in a year. He’s projected as an outside linebacker in the NFL.

Can the Jets wait three seasons for their quarterback to develop into a potential star?

They gave up their No. 6 overall pick and three second-round picks (two of them in 2018 and one in 2019) to find out. Usually, second-round picks are starters or players who get significant playing time.

“I feel good about it,” Todd Bowles said. “Obviously, the closer you get to the draft, the more draft capital goes up and you have to give up more than that. The fact we made the move early I thought was a very good move for us and we’re in a position to get a good player.”

At No. 3, the Jets might not get the player they want, but they remain in solid shape. They have held private workouts with four of the top five quarterbacks in the upcoming draft.

Emily Kaplan, national NHL reporter: Sure, why not? Vegas is flashing the attributes that most Stanley Cup winners possess. To begin, the Golden Knights have superb goaltending. Fleury was strong when he played during the regular season, though that wasn’t a lot (he made just 46 starts because of injuries) and he has looked spectacular in these playoffs, allowing just three total goals while posting a pair of shutouts.

The Trojans were coming off the 1967 national championship with Yary blocking for tailback O.J. Simpson, who rushed for 1,543 yards and finished second in voting for the Heisman Trophy. Simpson was a junior and ineligible for the draft, but that didn’t stop the Vikings from trying to come up with a way to acquire him.

“We actually tried to trade the pick to somebody so we could get O.J. the next year,’’ said Bud Grant, the hall of fame coach who was entering his second season with the Vikings in 1968. “We thought maybe we could go through the league and we could postpone the pick until the next year, but there was no avenue for us.

“It was more of a fantasy. So, we put that to bed and we all agreed Yary was the best player in the draft.”

After winning the Heisman Trophy in 1968, Simpson was the No. 1 pick in the 1969 draft, going to the Buffalo Bills — and then making the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But so did Yary, one of the best draft selections the Vikings have made.

Key dissenter in Ezekiel Elliott case leaves league office

Posted on by

Kia Roberts, a rare voice of reason and caution in the NFL’s Ezekiel Elliott investigation, has left the league office, according to Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Meanwhile, NFL senior V.P. of investigations Lisa Friel, whose credibility was called into question by one of the federal court rulings issued in the case, continues to be employed by the league, even though her work in both the Josh Brown case and the Elliott case raises real questions about her fitness for the job.

Then again, maybe she’s simply doing her job perfectly. The league’s effort to investigate and discipline players for off-field misconduct seems to be less about justice and more about P.R. Friel’s job could be, and perhaps is, to bridge the gap between facts and law on one hand and the outcome the league wants on the other — and to take the heat when things get periodically messy, so that others working at 345 Park Avenue will never face the blowback that comes from the perception/reality that the league was too soft on a player who possibly, maybe, might have committed a crime.

Rawls signed with the Jets today, the team announced.

While I’d imagine defense probably does get undersold a little in All-NBA voting, the evidence suggests that elite offense is somewhat more valuable than elite defense. Results of pure adjusted plus-minus (including RAPM, the forerunner of ESPN’s real plus-minus that considers only team performance with and without a player) show a wider spread of ratings on offense than defense — that is, the best offensive players help their offenses more than the best defensive players help their defenses.

@kpelton Coach of the Year thought. Since it’s often expectation vs result, would you be able to plug in actual minutes played to your preseason projection model and see which teams overachieved the most?flames_003

CBS says fewer ad breaks in NFL games will stay for the 2018 season

Posted on by

Last season, the NFL and its television partners reduced the amount of ad breaks from five per quarter to four. That was in hopes of stopping the silly score-commercial-kickoff-commercial sequence.

While it did reduce the number of those silly sequences, the change didn’t get rid of them totally.

We want our players to believe that opportunity is real. We want to be able to point to guys as examples of players who might have been generically referred to as depth at one point but wound up being a lot more than that.

One of those players this year could be reliever J.T. Chargois, plucked off waivers during spring training from the Twins. A fireballing righty, Chargois’ professional career to this point has been one of injuries and disappointment — he missed two full years in the minors because of elbow problems. On Opening Day, with the Dodgers trailing the Giants 1-0, Chargois became the first reliever called upon by Roberts during the 2018 season, coming on for Kershaw. He mowed down three straight Giants, striking out Austin Jackson and Andrew McCutchen, and touched 96 mph on the gun.

Even after signing Suh, the Rams will still have more than $20 million in salary-cap space. If they think Beckham could be the final piece of the puzzle, they just might be willing to part with a first-round pick as well as a primo pick in 2019, even if that’d leave them with no selections before the bottom half of the third round this year.

They also have a few young receivers to dangle instead of an additional pick, so there are options here.

McCallum was never convinced that those fears should prevent the Raiders from coming to Las Vegas. Determined to start the conversation, he got his chance before a Broncos-Raiders game on Nov. 9, 2014, at O.Co Stadium in Oakland.

McGee finished with six points and four rebounds in 14 minutes.

Posted on by

I have never had any motive other than that. My approach is and always has been to give people information based on my beliefs — then let them follow their own path toward what they believe works best for them. Ultimately every decision is up to each individual athlete.

Because of his relationship with Brady and the fact that he treated so many other players, Guerrero had nearly unlimited access to the team. But Belichick curbed that this year, exiling him from the sideline and locker room. After Belichick spelled that out in an email to Guerrero, several players reported that Guerrero had told them that Belichick had barred him from treating them. Some saw that as an attempt by Brady’s trainer to turn players against Belichick, dividing the team.

“They had 23 [points] at the end of the first quarter, we got [a great first quarter] out the way, but we got to also know we got four quarters of basketball left to play. So, we’re not impressed with giving up that many points in the last three quarters. We started the game off well, now we have to put the full game together.”

Kerr said he’s experimenting right now with the center position, stating that he’s looking for a spark. McGee will start again Saturday against the Oklahoma City Thunder. “JaVale gave us a different look,” Curry said, “I think sped us up a little bit on the offensive end and gave us a threat above the rim and pressuring you in the paint.”

Lewis in 2017 was an excellent return man and remained an open-field threat as a receiver, but he also proved he can be a complete runner working between the tackles and handling a good workload. He was a key cog for New England, but that team doesn’t typically spend much to keep backs.

None of that matters. Croc doesn’t represent anything, now. Brady is not a playful guy when he loses, and he most likely won’t be a playful guy until he wins another Super Bowl. Can you imagine having to be around him in the days, weeks, and months following that loss? He probably won’t ever tell another joke again.

What I’m saying is, I fear the TB Times narrative is dead. I’d love for it to come back next year, I really would, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s run its course. Croc is probably dead, too. Brady, S.M.G., and D.K. have probably already sent him to a nice farm upstate to run around with all the other crocodiles, if you catch my drift.

He’s close to being fully recovered from the torn ACL he suffered in Jacksonville’s first game last season. He had a monster 2015 campaign as a big-play and red-zone threat before cooling off in 2016. He is the only true No. 1 outside wideout available, but the Jaguars have the cap room to bring him back post-injury.

Trammell was en route to Orlando from San Diego and was departing his flight when he received the call.

After the bad publicity from that, Jeter tried to hire the four men back, but at a much reduced rate. They all declined.

New Mexico State, meanwhile, hasn’t bowled since 1960 and is breaking the nation’s longest postseason drought. No assignment, even to the least prestigious bowl out there, would be a disappointment to the Aggies.

Arians feels there would be greater uniformity in rules enforcement if more than 17 percent of NFL officials (21 of 134) were working on a full-time basis. The league began hiring full-time officials this season with plans to grow the ranks in future years.

Asked why he believes having full-time officials would result in better game-day performances, Arians said, “They’d be held more accountable, first of all. Right now they’re accountable to their union. There are no ramifications (for), ‘Hey, I made a bad call. My bad.’ If they were full time and under the league umbrella, that would be totally different.”

Like Morris, he was asked to keep the news under his hat at first, so he avoided his traveling companions, who included big league managers Bruce Bochy, Bud Black, Rich Renteria and Brad Ausmus, as well as former Padre Trevor Hoffman. Finally, as he approached the baggage claim area, time was up and he was able to share the excitement.

If there’s a game the Seahawks could most afford to lose, it’s the Week 17 finale against the Cardinals. That would still give them the tiebreaker over the Cowboys after eliminating them from consideration head-to-head in Week 16. The Falcons could easily lose two with what’s left (at Buccaneers, at Saints, vs. Panthers) and the Packers just need to lose once (at Panthers, vs. Vikings, at Lions) with an even tougher slate.nike_chargers_537-180x180

Glenn played parts of 12 seasons in the NFL — six with the New England Patriots

Sean Allen reviews players who can help in fantasy with one-category production and provides his latest top-250 rest-of-the-season rankings for fantasy hockey leagues.
Micheal Ferland, RW, Calgary Flames (22.6 percent)

The day that Ferland falls from his prized slot on a top line with Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan spells an immediate end to his run as viable fantasy commodity. But until then, the 25-year-old’s point-per-game pace alongside the Flames’ top two producers can’t be discounted. If Ferland remains available in your league, consider exploiting the fantasy fallout spoils from the company he keeps, at least for now.

“He’s done an amazing job. He’s done a great job ever since I’ve been here,” Westbrook said of Presti. “He’s finding ways to constantly keep making us a better team. … You definitely are very, very thankful to have somebody like that in charge of making those decisions.”

Hopefully the resulting mess will prompt the Packers to re-evaluate what they need in order to be a more complete team when Rodgers returns next season.

Glenn played parts of 12 seasons in the NFL — six with the New England Patriots, five with the Dallas Cowboys and one with the Green Bay Packers. He made the Pro Bowl in 1999 as a member of the Patriots and finished his career with 8,823 yards and 44 touchdowns.

Former NFL quarterback Drew Bledsoe, who was Glenn’s teammate with the Patriots and Cowboys, said Glenn turned a corner as he got older.

“He was one of those guys that just grew up in the worst possible environment, and he told me at one point he had a hard time trusting people because everybody he ever trusted either betrayed him or died and so he kept to himself,” Bledsoe told ESPN’s Todd Archer. nike_bills-057

Is Giannis Antetokounmpo worth the cost in DFS on Wednesday?

Posted on by

Which players should you build around and which players should you fade in DFS as we tip off Wednesday’s NBA action? Our experts have the answers.

The Oilers pulled Talbot, who faced just three shots, in favor of Lauren Brossoit. It was the third time this season Talbot, who has started 105 of Edmonton’s last 116 games, has been pulled.

Brossoit faced 37 shots and allowed six goals.

St. Louis went up 3-0 when Jaden Schwartz knocked in the rebound of a shot by Tarasenko. Brossoit kicked out Tarasenko’s shot and it went right to Schwartz, who snapped in a wrist shot from the high slot at 3:52 of the second.

Allen dedicates performance to grandfather: Chargers wideout Keenan Allen racked up 12 catches for 159 yards and two touchdowns in the Chargers’ blowout win over the Nathan Peterman-led Bills and dedicated his display to his maternal grandfather, who passed away Saturday. Asked if his grandfather would have enjoyed his performance, Allen replied: “Most definitely, yes. I thought about my grandpa quite a lot today.”

Newton posted this the day after he, through his foundation, fed more than 850 kids in the Charlotte area a Thanksgiving meal at a local Topgolf facility. He said during the event that his goal is to impact kids in a way he never was when growing up.

“That’s what you have a foundation for,” Newton said. “It’s to make an impact. I play football on Sundays, but so much of me is bigger than football and more to it than just running touchdowns and throwing touchdowns.bills-034

Senior forward Stephanie Mavunga had 28 points and 23 rebounds.

She averaged a double-double last season (11.4 PPG, 10.8 RPG) but missed 13 games due to injuries. McGuff said she’s healthy.

“She has had an unbelievable offseason,” he said. “She’s gotten in the best shape of her life. She’s really taken her physical stature to another level. I’ve actually never been around a player, in over 20 years coaching, who’s done more in terms of her diet to change her body. She’s really getting up and down the floor and doing a wonderful job right now.”

Green argued that when Beal wrapped him up, he had no choice but to attempt to free himself. And thus, he believes he should not have been ejected and should not have been fined.

“And out in the world, if somebody hits you, you’re allowed to defend yourself. It’s called self-defense,” he said. “If somebody shoots you, you’re allowed to shoot back. Self-defense. I got hit and didn’t even hit back and got fined.

“And then for him to get fined only $50,000 and I get fined $25,000. Oubre came in throwing punches and he gets fined less than me? That just don’t add up. I know [the league is] not the biggest fan of me, and that’s fine, but don’t be so obvious that you’re not the biggest fan of me. That’s just too obvious. So, I think at the end of the day, they’re going to make out who they want to make out to be the bad guy. That’s cool, but be fair across the board.”

“Many players have been deeply troubled by the disturbing comments made by Texans’ owner Bob McNair,” the Players Coalition said in a statement. “It is ironic that such a quote would emerge in the midst of an ongoing struggle to highlight injustices suffered by people of color, including our nation’s deeply flawed approach to criminal justice and inhumane treatment of imprisoned people.”

Falcons beat Jets, break three-game losing streak

Posted on by

The Atlanta Falcons needed a bounce-back game after three straight tough losses, and on Sunday, they got exactly that, beating the New York Jets, 25-20.

Here’s what we learned from the afternoon:

1. The Falcons ended their three-game losing streak, but they were far from perfect. Matt Ryan lost three fumbles on the snap exchange, accounting for two turnovers and a failed 2-point conversion attempt. Austin Hooper dropped a sure touchdown. They had just two touchdowns in six red-zone trips. A punt return touchdown was wiped out by penalty. And yet, it was still good enough to beat the Jets, who do just enough to lose every week. It’s the sign of a truly good bad team.

2. For the third consecutive game, the Jets scored a touchdown on their opening drive. They’re also 0-3 in those games, so go figure. This time, an eight-play, 75-yard drive ended with a 20-yard strike from Josh McCown to tight end Eric Tomlinson. Credit goes to Jets offensive coordinator Johnnie Morton, who is obviously doing a nice job scouting these opposing defenses and has had a nice season overall.

When Gurriel came to the plate to lead off the second inning, fans got on him again. Dodgers starter Rich Hill even stepped off the mound for a moment as the jeers grew louder and later acknowledged that it was a “silent gesture” to condemn Gurriel’s insult.

The Dodgers won 3-1 to send the series to a decisive Game 7 on Wednesday at Dodger Stadium. Before Tuesday’s game, Darvish, who is scheduled to start Game 7, maintained his stance of forgiveness toward Gurriel.

“I wasn’t that frustrated at that point when I saw it the first time,” Darvish said through an interpreter. “And then after the game like he contacted us and said, ‘Hey, I’d like to meet you and apologize,’ but I told him, ‘Hey, you don’t have to do that, because you made a comment and, like, I’m not that mad.’ So like I really didn’t care that much about that.”
